HandiTax - How do I understand the HandiTax detailed error report?

Updated over a month ago

After you complete a client's tax form, you should check the tax form for errors. All errors should then be resolved before the client signs the tax return and you lodge it with the ATO.

The HandiTax Error Navigator enables you to locate and resolve SBR validation errors quickly by taking you to the exact place on the form where the error may have occurred.

  1. Select the client and their tax form.

  2. At the bottom of the Tax Return Outline, Form, Schedule or Worksheet, click Errors.

  3. The "Error Navigator" window lists all the errors with their possible locations and a brief message.

  4. To get more details on an error, highlight the error and either press F1 or click Details.

  5. To go directly to the where the error is located; either double-click on the error, or highlight the error and click Goto.

  6. HandiTax will take you directly to a form and field where the error may have occurred.

  7. Fix the error on the form as required.

Detailed Error Report

  1. From the Clients Tax Return Outline window, click Errors, Report.

  2. The components of an error report are:

  • HandiTax year 20XX and version number. If you are having difficulty resolving an error message, please ensure you are using the latest version of HandiTax.

  • Error or Warning Code. This uniquely identifies the error or warning.

  • Schedule in which the error is found. e.g: FORM_I No 1 - Main Form I, I_COVER - Cover page.

  • Indicates if the message is an Error or a Warning message.

  • A detailed description of the error. Use this information in conjunction with (c) to resolve the error message.

Notes:

  • Error messages are more severe than warning messages. An error message will occur when there is something wrong with the taxation form. That error must be resolved before HandiTax will allow you to electronically lodge the tax form.

  • Warning messages are designed to draw your attention to an item that may be incorrect. Whenever a warning occurs, please check the item. If you find the item to be correct, then you can safely ignore the message. Unfortunately, you cannot suppress the warning message. The presence of a warning message in a tax form will not stop the return from being electronically lodged.
