Warning: It is crucial to install your HandiSoft programs in the correct location; otherwise, client data may not be available.
Tip: You can open any existing HandiSoft program, go to Help, then About to find your installation location.
Find your HandiSoft Installation Location
If you do not know the location of your HSoft folder, you can do the following:
Locate any HandiSoft shortcut icon on your desktop.
Right-click on the icon, then choose Properties.
Go to the Target field and note the path to the HSoft folder (disregard everything after HSoft in the path).
In this example below, the install path will be C:\SDH_ODB support installation\HSoft.
Select the location during installation
If you have previously installed a HandiSoft program, then during the installation process, the installation wizard will prompt you to select a location from a list.
β
If the list does not include the path you wish to use, you will need to Browse for the correct location. Keep in mind that the install wizard will automatically annex a HSoft folder to the installation, so when you browse for the install location, point it to the directory containing the HSoft directory, if one already exists.
β
Example:
Mapping Network Drives
Make sure when you are mapping network drives that you do not include the HSoft folder in the mapped name, as you will then not be able to install the program or create the correct workstation install using the Installation wizard. For example, N: must NOT be mapped to C:\HSoft, it should just include the C:\.
β
We recommend you run the program from a mapped network drive rather than the UNC path. Running our program from the UNC path can sometimes cause abnormal behaviour. You can check this in the Help and About menu in your HandiSoft program. UNC paths begin with "\", whereas a mapped network drive will begin with a (drive) letter.
Note: If you are using a mapped drive and you cannot find it, or you receive an error 'There is not enough free space to install HandiSoft SQL on the selected drive' when using the mapped drive during installation, you will need to use a UNC instead of a mapped network drive.
To find the specific mapped network UNC
You can use the NET USE command to list all the shared drives mapped on your computer. To access the command, follow the steps below.
Hold the Windows icon down and press R.
Type cmd or command prompt and press Enter.
In the command prompt window, type NET USE and press Enter.
The command will return the mapped network shared drive paths.
In this example, the installation path to the HSoft folder on the Y:\ using the UNC is \\logesh\notes\Hsoft.
Note: The install path should always end with the \HSoft folder.
Web updates
Web updates are installed in the same manner.
You can install any version going forward, as it contains all the program files. The web updates only contain particular files, therefore, you would need to have installed the full version download that incorporates the first number. For example, if you have downloaded and installed the full version 2.00, you can install version 2.03. However, if you have only installed version 1.00, you cannot install version 2.03 without a full version download with the version number 2.xx.
