HandiTax - How do I restore a deleted client from backup

Updated over a month ago

Note: This procedure is for HandiTax desktop installations only. If you use HandiSoft Online, please raise a new case with support online and reference the title of this article. Include the HandiTax year and the reference code of your deleted client in your case notes.

For HandiTax desktop users please follow the instructions below to restore a deleted HandiTax Client from a backup:

  1. Locate your backup copy of your HSoft folder.

  2. Inside the HSoft\Apps folder, locate the file HTxx.exe and run it, this is the HandiTax-specific year application file e.g. Ht24.exe.  When you run the file, you will be accessing the HandiTax application for the relevant year.

  3. Find the client that has been deleted from the working instance of HandiTax and tag them. Press F6 to ensure no other clients are tagged, as all tagged clients will be exported.

  4. Go to Tools, Copy tagged clients to disk/email.

  5. Select Drive/Directory,and then Browse to a location to save the files.

  6. Click OK.

  • Data will be saved as 2 files e.g. Clients.24d & Returns.24d (depending on the year that is being exported.

  • You will not be able to open either of these files due to encryption. The files need to be imported, as per the steps below.

7. Once you have successfully exported the files from the backup, you can exit the backup copy of HandiTax.

How to import the file/s into the working instance of HandiTax

  1. Open your working copy of HandiTax 20xx application and do the following:

  2. Go to Tools, Merge Files from Disk.

  3. Click Browse.

  4. Locate and select the location/folder where the file was previously exported from the backup version.

  5. Click OK to import.

  6. In the Merge Client Data window, select Prompt before overwriting and click Yes to Tag merged clients, then click OK. This will check that there is no data for this client already and doesn’t exist before importing it. If data is found, a pop-up message will ask if you want to overwrite the current data.

Once this process is complete, the data should be restored.
