When opening HandiTax or when trying to lodge, the application configuration file error may occur.
If you receive this error:
Close out of HandiTax.
Open File Explorer to navigate to the HSoft\Apps folder.
Check the Properties of the HtXX.exe.Config files, as below:
The 'Opens With' program should be set to nothing or Notepad.
Right-click a HtXX.exe.Config file, Properties. (where XX represents the HandiTax year).
If 'Opens with' is set to another application, click Change to select Notepad.
If the error still occurs, rename the HtXX.exe.Config file (or for SQL: HtXXSql.exe.Config) to HtXX.exe.ConfigOLD (XX represents the HandiTax year).
Log in to HandiTax. This will generate a new config file, and the error should be resolved.
