HandiTax - Lodgments failing when using the ATO Credential Authentication method in HandiTax

Updated over a month ago

Due to recent changes in the Transport Layer Security (TLS) used by the ATO’s lodging service, some users may be unable to prefill using the ATO Credential Authentication (AS4) method.

To resolve, the TLS version needs to be V1.2. To update to TLS V1.2, ensure you are on HandiTax 2025 V1.00 or higher. This process should be run on all PC's affected:

  1. Go to the HSoft\Apps folder and look for ConfigureTLS.reg file.

  2. Double-click the file to run it.

  3. Click OK to close the box.

  4. Open HandiTax, then go to Lodgment, Set ATO Credentials.

  5. Click the radio button ATO Credential Authentication and enter your keystore password.

  6. Click OK, then OK again to restart HandiTax.

  7. Open HandiTax again, then attempt a prefill or lodgment.

Troubleshooting

If you experience the following error when running the ConfigureTLS.reg file:

  1. Copy the ConfigureTLS.reg file to a local destination (to ensure appropriate admin rights, we recommend creating a folder in your C:\ called 'TempTLS' and pasting the file there).

  2. Open the Register Editor, ensuring to run as Administrator. You may be prompted for an administrator account and password. If you do not have these on hand, you will need to contact your IT professionals.

  3. Select File, Import, Browse to get to the ConfigureTLS.reg, then select it.

  4. You will receive a message to indicate that the File has been successfully imported "Registry Editor. The keys and values contained in C:\Users\Your.name\Desktop\ConfigureTLS.reg have been successfully added to the registry."

    Registry Editor
  5. Lodge again.
