Why does the HandiTax estimate differs from ATO assessment notice?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

HandiTax Estimate and the Notice of Assessment

Due to the complex nature of the tax legislation, we have based our calculations on our interpretation of them. We provide the estimate without any warranty of any kind.

It is the responsibility of the tax agent to satisfy themselves that the tax estimate is accurate before giving it to the taxpayer. Any item that you consider incorrect in the tax estimate can be amended by editing the tax estimate.

Editing the Tax Estimate

To edit the tax estimate:

  1. From the Client menu, click Open Clients/Tax Forms.

  2. Select the Client and their Tax Form you wish to edit.

  3. Highlight Tax Estimate in the Tax Return Outline window, click Edit.

  4. Edit the values that you consider incorrect and amend, click Save.

Example: The edited values will be in black text; all other values will be in a grey shade text.

ATO assessment that differs from the HandiTax Estimate

Should you receive an assessment, which indicates that we may have not calculated the estimate correctly, we would appreciate it if you could forward us copies of the following:

  • The Tax Return, together with all the worksheets and the original Tax Estimate.

  • Notice of Assessment.

  • The ATO tax calculation statement.

  • Your manual calculation.

The above items will enable us to check the calculation and allow us to understand how the tax office is interpreting the legislation. We can then make any adjustments to our calculations should they be necessary.

Note: Please check in Help, About, that you are running the latest HandiTax Version for the current year, select Software Updates, to upgrade to the latest HandiTax version.
