HandiTax - How do I create a modem and set ELS options for prior years?

Updated over a month ago

Please Note:

  • This is a guide only and you may require the assistance of your IT Technician to complete this process.

  • HandiSoft Support is unable to make changes to your computer settings.

  • If you or your IT support cannot install a modem on your computer, or you still get modem errors, we recommend that you lodge by paper.

Creating a Modem for Windows 10

  1. Open your Control Panel.

  2. Search for Phone and Modem.

  3. Key in the Area Code and click OK.

4. Select the Modems Tab.

5. Click on Add.

6. Tick Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list.

7. Select Standard 56000 bps Modem.

8. Select a port, if there are no ports for selection, a virtual port would be required. Please try these steps Add virtual COM ports on Windows 10 [2 ways to resolve the issue] Note: You may need assistance from your IT person.

9. Click Next and Finish, a modem should be set.

Once you have a modem installed, you will need to set the communication options in HandiTax.

Setting communication options:

  1. Open HandiTax (the prior year).

  2. Go to the Options menu and click ELS Communications.

  3. On the Modem tab, use the dropdown menu to select the modem you installed previously and click Apply.

4. Select the Security tab and in the New Austpac NUI field, please type the NUI number which you see marked in green in the following screenshot (this is a dummy entry, the NUI does not need to be a valid NUI, it only needs to be in a valid format), then tick Fix Mistake if NUI has expired and click Apply and the NUI will shift down into Current Austpac NUI.

5. Follow the procedure to create the ELS file in the prior year, and then lodge in the current year.
