If you're an Australian resident for tax purposes for a full year and you pay no tax on the first $18,200 of your income, this is called the tax-free threshold. If you intend to reside in Australia during the income year, your tax-free threshold may be adjusted.
Log into HandiTax.
Select the client, then click the Tax Forms button at the bottom.
Highlight the I Form, then click Edit.
Tick the Resident checkbox, click Save, then Select.
From the tax return outline, highlight the Cover, then click Edit.
Enter the date range your taxpayer was a resident, then click Save, Close.
Highlight the Main form I, then click Edit.
Go to item A2, then press OK and enter the date the residency changed and include the number of months eligible for the threshold.
Complete the return as required.
Review the Estimate/Refund page to see the effect item A2 has on the Tax-Free Part.
Please refer to the ATO's website, Tax-free threshold for newcomers to Australia for examples and descriptions. Please contact the ATO's Tax Agent Hotline if you require further guidance on completing your tax return.
