HandiTax - A Client is selected by another user error in HandiTax

Updated over a month ago

The message 'Unable to select client, Client selected by xxxxxxx' may appear when a HandiTax user selects a client.

This can be a result of user 'xxxxxxx' still having the client selected, or the program was incorrectly exited while the client was selected. User 'xxxxxxx' may not have the client currently selected, be using HandiTax, or may not even be a current employee.

Tip: To minimise this, ensure users deselect their client before closing HandiTax by going to Client, De-select selected client.

HandiSoft Desktop users

  1. Exit out of HandiTax.

  2. Open File Explorer and navigate to your HSoft\Apps folder.

  3. Double-click on HTnn.exe, where nn represents the year.

  4. Log in by selecting the username 'xxxxxxx' or ADMINISTRATOR.

  5. Select the client, then from the Client menu, click De-select the selected client.

  6. Exit out of HandiTax.

  7. Start the program again using the desired username.

Note: If your practice uses Practice Manager Security, the Administrator may need to temporarily disable it during this operation if the login is password-protected.

HandiSoft Online users

  1. Click on the Windows Icon on the bottom left, select File Explorer.

  2. Select App (Z:), if this is not showing expand This PC to show all.

  3. Double-click on Apps, then locate the correct application HTnn i.e. HandiTax 2025 would be HT25.exe or if using the SQL version, HT25SQL.exe.

  4. Double-click on the correct application, log in by then select the username displayed in the error message.

  5. Select the client, then from the Client menu, click De-select the selected client.

Note: You will need to suspend or unsuspend a user if you get an error when logging in as the affected username 'Unable to authenticate user login: Account for "xxxxxxx" has been suspended. Please contact your supervisor for further details'.

Are more clients selected by other users?

  1. Create a report using the following additional field Selected@Clients. You can expand the Client List Abbreviated report to include this field.

  2. Run your report using the client expression (Selected@Clients <>"").

  3. The combination of the two will produce a report that shows the clients selected and the username that has them selected.
